چکیده

Using non-rigid-foldable origami patterns to design mechanical metamaterials could potentially offer more versatile behaviors than the rigid-foldable ones, but their applications are limited by lack of analytical framework for predicting behavior. Here, we propose a theoretical model characterize square-twist pattern its rigid counterpart. Based on experimentally observed deformation mode square-twist, virtual crease was added in central square turn one. Two possible paths were calculated through kinematic analysis counterpart, and associated energy force derived analytically. model, first time discovered that structure bifurcated follow low-energy path, which validated experiments. Furthermore, properties be programmed geometrical parameters material stiffness creases facets. This work thus paves way development origami-based serving mechanical, thermal, other engineering applications.

Rigid-Foldable Thick Origami

In this paper, a method is proposed for geometrically constructing thick panel structures that follow the kinetic behavior of rigid origami by using tapered or two-ply panels and hinges located at their edges. The proposed method can convert generalized pattern of rigid-foldable origami into thick panels structure with kinetic motion, which leads to novel designs of origami for various engineer...

Generalization of Rigid Foldable Quadrilateral Mesh Origami

In general, a quadrilateral mesh surface does not enable a continuous rigid motion because an overconstrained system, in which the number of constraints around degree-4 vertices (three for each vertex) exceeds the number of variables (the number of hinges), is constructed. However, it is known that the developable double corrugation surface, called Miura-ori, produces a rigid deployment mechani...

Deployment Methods for an Origami-Inspired Rigid-Foldable Array

The design for the array was inspired by the origami flasher model (Lang, 1997; Shafer, 2001). Figure 1 shows the array prototyped from Garolite and Kapton film at the CubeSat scale. Prior work demonstrated that rigid panels like solar cells could successfully be folded into the final stowed configuration without requiring the panels to flex (Zirbel, Lang, Thomson, & al., 2013). The design of t...

Finite element modeling of non-rigid origami

Origami has become a source of inspiration in engineering for structural design and the creation of mechanical metamaterials. In the often used analytic geometric and energy methods, it is difficult to incorporate deformation of the faces in non-rigid origami. However, deformation of the faces can play a significant role in their mechanical behaviour. This thesis aims to investigate and improve...

Rigidly foldable origami gadgets and tessellations

Rigidly foldable origami allows for motion where all deflection occurs at the crease lines and facilitates the application of origami in materials other than paper. In this paper, we use a recently discovered method for determining rigid foldability to identify existing flat-foldable rigidly foldable tessellations, which are also categorized. We introduce rigidly foldable origami gadgets which ...
